Endoscopic insufflation and water delivery failure

Air and water delivery failure is the most common malfunction during endoscope use. This is because the nozzle connected to the air and water delivery pipe is small and has a bend. During suction, due to negative pressure, food residue, blood clots, necrotic tissue, etc., can easily be sucked into the nozzle. Therefore, checking, handling, and preventing air and water delivery failures are daily tasks for endoscopists.
1. Inspection methods for air and water delivery failures: Place the endoscope in the cleaning tank, submerge the lens in water, and deliver air. Observe the size of the bubbles. When unobstructed, the bubble diameter can reach 1.0 cm. The more severe the blockage, the smaller the bubble, or even no bubbles; use a 50ml syringe to inject water into the air and water delivery port. If the water stream is not smooth or the direction of the water stream changes, it indicates partial blockage; check if the water bottle is sealed and if the water bottle cap gasket is deformed or aged; if the air and water delivery force weakens during use, but the injection with a syringe is smooth, then the air pump of the host should be considered.
2. Handling of air and water delivery failures: When air and water delivery is found to be obstructed, repeatedly press the air and water delivery buttons. If handled promptly, the foreign object can usually be flushed out; if the nozzle is blocked, cut a strip of discarded X-ray film slightly narrower than the nozzle and gently insert it into the nozzle to remove the foreign object. Then repeatedly inject water into the air and water delivery port to clear the blockage; for deeper blockages of the air and water delivery pipe, inject enzyme cleaning solution used for cleaning endoscopes into the air and water delivery pipe, soak for several minutes, and then repeatedly pressurize and inject air and water with a 50ml syringe to clear the blockage; ethanol ether can also be used.
