Analysis and Repair of Common Endoscopic Tubing Malfunctions

Analysis of the structure of this endoscope reveals the cause of the malfunction:
(1)The water source for the endoscope is tap water, which is of poor quality and contains impurities. Over time, these impurities and scale cause pipe blockages;
(2)Disinfectant is used without filtration. Since disinfectants often contain crystalline particles, they also easily cause pipe blockages;
(3)During gastroscopy, gastric mucus and contents enter the air and water pipes. If not completely removed during aspiration, they remain in the pipes and cause blockages.
Because this endoscope is a fiber endoscope, it cannot be cleared with thin wires or hard substances. Previously, when using a cold light source for air and water flushing, the direction of air and water flow was always from the cold light source air pump to the control button, and then to the lens outlet, from top to bottom, in one direction. The lens outlet is designed to spray air and water to the side, so after prolonged use, impurities and sediments accumulate in the bends of the lens, accumulating more and more until blockage. Based on the above analysis, the author used an air pump to blow air in the opposite direction from the lens to the cold light source, which solved the problem.

Method One
(1)After encountering water and air injection failures, first disconnect the endoscope from the cold light source and check to eliminate any cold light source fan malfunctions or water or air leaks.
(2)Connect the aspirator to the end of the endoscope. Simultaneously press the water and air injection buttons, and turn on the aspirator for 3-5 minutes. (3)Use fine-tipped forceps to remove and clear the metal nozzle at the end of the endoscope.

Method Two
(1)First, soak the lens in about 37-40℃ of clean water for about 5-10 minutes. This can dissolve or loosen the deposits on the lens;
(2)Cover the head of the air pump with three layers of gauze, and then place a silicone tube of the same diameter as the air pump head and lens over the gauze. Gently place the other end of the silicone tube onto the lens. (The purpose of covering the air pump head with gauze is to prevent impurities in the air pump from entering the endoscope.)
(3)Disconnect the air and water control button, block the sampling port with your hand, and then slowly inflate. To prevent damage to the fiber, do not use excessive force when inflating; gradually increase the force until there is a smooth airflow at the air and water control button. This will resolve the malfunction.
Originally, we considered using oxygen or a compressor for inflation, but the air pressure is difficult to control and may damage the fiber. An air pump allows for better control of the air pressure and is less likely to damage the fiber. Over the years, when encountering endoscope pipe blockages, this method has been used with great success; this method is simple to operate, applicable to other types of endoscopes, does not damage the fiber, and saves on repair costs and improves the utilization rate of endoscopes.
