Three Examples of Ultrasound System Errors

Malfunction 1

1. Malfunction Phenomenon

The Ultrasound machine, Sonix TOUCH, displays a boot self-test error “Testminial power voltage failed”, and after entering the system, it cannot recognize any probes.

2. Malfunction Analysis

During the startup process, the machine performs a system self-check. An error occurs during probe detection. Based on the error message, the initial suspicion is a power voltage failure, or it could be caused by loose cabling.

3. Solution

The internal structure of this machine is very compact, divided into front-end and back-end parts, differing from traditional ultrasound machines. The front-end is located on the right side of the machine and is combined with the back-end using hinges. The connection method is dual-cable connection.

After opening the machine from the right side, first remove the two cables. Measurement with a multimeter shows that the cable connections are normal. After re-plugging, the machine is turned on for testing, and the malfunction still exists. This rules out the problem of loose cables. Then, the entire front-end is removed. The front-end consists of three circuit boards: an ultrasound interface board, an ultrasound transmission board, and an ultrasound receiving board. The three front-end boards are removed, and the components on the boards are carefully examined. There are no signs of burn-out. After reassembling and testing, the malfunction still exists, ruling out the problem of poor contact.

Looking at the front-end circuit boards again, they are divided into interface board, channel board, and power supply board. Based on experience, the power supply board is usually checked first. By measuring the output of each node on the power supply board one by one, it was found that one of the isolation power supplies had no output. After replacing it, the malfunction was eliminated.

Malfunction 2

1. Malfunction Phenomenon

The Samsung Medison SA-8000EX displays a black screen upon startup. After 5-6 minutes, a “system error” error appears, with an error code of 39, preventing access to the system.

2. Malfunction Analysis

According to the error code “39”, which is caused by DSC, the initial suspicion is a memory or power supply malfunction.

3. Solution

(1) Memory check: The memory module is removed, cleaned, and re-inserted. The machine is restarted and the malfunction persists. Another identical memory module is replaced, and the malfunction still exists, ruling out memory failure.

(2) Power supply check: The output voltage of each end of the power supply (PW1~PW5) is measured upon startup. It was found that the 5V output of PWR3 is only 0.7V, and the +12V and -12V of PWR4 are only 4V and 2.1V, respectively. The voltages of other ports are normal. This indicates a power supply module failure. After consultation with the manufacturer, the power supply module was replaced, and the machine restored to normal operation. As shown in Figure 2.

Malfunction 3

1. Malfunction Phenomenon

During use, the Philips IE-33 displays a system overheating alarm with error code “001”. Clicking ‘continue’ allows the machine to continue running, but if left unattended, the machine may crash.

2. Malfunction Analysis

Overheating alarms are very common and generally fall into two categories: front-end overheating alarm and back-end chassis overheating.

Back-end chassis overheating is mainly caused by excessive CPU temperature. In this case, the CPU cooling fan and air filter should be considered.

Front-end overheating alarms involve several circuit boards in the front-end chassis. Each circuit board has a temperature sensor to detect the temperature. An overheating alarm will be triggered if the temperature of any circuit board is too high.

3. Solution

(1) Clean the air filter behind all fan covers.

(2) Check if the back-end chassis condensing fan is rotating.

(3) Enter the machine's Test/Config to check the temperature of each front-end board.

(4) Which board is overheating? Which board has a temperature difference of more than 8 degrees? It needs to be replaced.
