Heavy rainfall and other abnormal weather conditions, accompanied by flooding, can cause hospital medical equipment to be soaked in rainwater, resulting in damage to the insulation of electrical equipment, equipment leakage endangering personal safety, and also easily causing electrical short circuits and fires, bringing huge harm to human-machine safety and hospital property.
The following tips can provide guidance and help to hospitals in terms of flood prevention and control of medical imaging equipment, emergency treatment of water immersion, and equipment restoration.
01 Tips for Flood Prevention and Control of Medical Imaging Equipment
Seal all channels through which rainwater may Enter the equipment room, check the airtightness of the cable trenches, and if necessary, take measures to seal all cable entry and exit holes and trench covers to prevent water from Entering the cable trenches.
When a flood warning is issued, plan to shut down the equipment in advance. In addition to turning off the equipment's own power switches, it is also necessary to turn off the power main switches of the switchgear and distribution panels that supply power to the equipment. At the same time, notify the hospital's power management department to implement the shutdown of the upper-level power supply of the switchgear/distribution panel.


Quickly remove and place easily removable equipment and accessories (such as the ECG monitoring equipment, high-pressure injector, and AW workstation of the CT) in a safe place for storage.


For removable, precision, and valuable equipment components (such as the mobile detector of DR equipment, external DR workstation, MR equipment coils, etc.), they can be disassembled and stored in a safe place. Specific disassembly methods and procedures can be obtained through prior communication with the original factory technicians for guidance and practice.

For equipment and components that cannot be moved or disassembled, necessary measures must be taken to minimize the impact and reduce losses. Methods such as raising the mainframe cabinet, raising the external UPS, putting on waterproof bags, using waterproof cloth, and sealing with waterproof tape can be used to prevent water from directly damaging the equipment.
At the same time, the equipment or valuable precision components can be placed at a possible high point, such as raising the CT scanning bed to the highest position, rotating the CT detector to the 12 o'clock position of the frame, and raising the detector of the X-ray equipment to the highest position. Please communicate with the original factory technicians for guidance on the key components and related operations of each equipment.

Nuclear Medicine Equipment Calibration Source Disposal:
1. Please place the external radioactive calibration source of the equipment in a safe location in the high-activity room;
2. If the built-in calibration source of the equipment has not been flooded, it can be kept as is, and it can be used after the equipment room flood is dealt with and assessed;
3. If the built-in calibration source of the equipment is flooded, please promptly report to the hospital emergency office for disposal.

02Emergency Disposal Methods After Equipment Water Immersion
If water immersion has occurred in the equipment room, do not Enter the equipment room, do not touch any metal surfaces, and prevent accidental electric shock;
If it is found that the equipment has been immersed in water and the circuit breaker has tripped, do not attempt to re-energize the machine; contact the hospital's professional personnel to cut off the power step by step;
If water immersion has occurred in the equipment room, but the equipment is still powered, immediately contact the hospital's professional personnel to find the upstream power supply (hospital power distribution room) and turn off the upstream power supply of the equipment under safe conditions;
After confirming that the input power supply and all related power supplies of the equipment room have been cut off, wait for 15-20 minutes before Entering the equipment room wearing the prescribed protective equipment;

03Precautions for Equipment Restoration After Water Immersion

To ensure the safety of equipment and personnel, please be sure to power on only after the engineer arrives to inspect and evaluate.

1. The equipment-specific air switches on the equipment room distribution boxes are in the "off" state;
2. The equipment's own power switch is in the "off" state.
Avoid direct power supply to untreated medical equipment to prevent component damage and electric shock hazards.
Perform preliminary processing (before processing, ensure that the equipment is powered off and personnel are protected):
1. According to the different degrees of water immersion, mark the water immersion location so that the engineer can quickly understand the water immersion situation after arrival and conduct targeted inspections and processing;
2. Before drying, perform preliminary processing on the outside of the equipment, cleaning dirt, grease, impurities, etc. on the equipment.
3. Configure high-power exhaust equipment to maintain ventilation, remove indoor moisture, reduce humidity, and equip the machine room with a dehumidifier if ventilation is insufficient.
4. Open the equipment cabinet doors and lift the cable trench covers to maximize the removal of residual water and debris, accelerating the drying process.
Implement disinfection procedures:
Carry out environmental and equipment disinfection according to national regulations on epidemic prevention and disinfection after water disasters, and prepare consumables such as waterless alcohol, special circuit board cleaning agents, and desiccants.
Precautions for handling ultrasound equipment after water immersion:
Especially for esophageal probes, intracavitary probes, and other probes that are in direct contact with patients, the insulation performance will decrease after flood immersion, and mud, water vapor, etc., may enter the inside of the probe. Cleaning, drying, and disinfection are required, along with professional tests such as leakage current. For special probes such as esophageal probes, the probe portion inserted into the human body should first be cleaned with an enzymatic cleaning agent, then disinfected with glutaraldehyde or orthophthalaldehyde or other GE-recommended disinfectants, rinsed with clean water, and dried. For parts such as esophageal probe connectors, first wipe the connector with a soft cloth dampened with a minimal amount of disinfectant ( Do not wipe the pin area of the connector), then wipe the connector with a soft cloth dampened with a minimal amount of clean water to remove residual chemicals. The probe must be in an absolutely safe state before it can be used again;
Precautions for handling UPS for imaging equipment after water immersion:
UPS units contain battery packs of varying power. After water immersion, even if the external power supply is cut off, there is still a risk of electric shock and leakage current. Protective measures must be taken when cleaning around the UPS, and non-professionals should not open or clean the inside of the UPS. Professional personnel must inspect and evaluate it. If unsure, consult the manufacturer's engineer.
