The scope of examination for endoscopic ultrasound

Endoscopic ultrasound is a medical device that combines endoscopy and ultrasound technology. An ultrasound probe is placed in front of an endoscope (gastroscope, colonoscope) and inserted into the digestive tract (esophagus, common bile duct) through the body cavity. Endoscopic ultrasound allows direct observation of the patient's in-cavity morphology and enables real-time ultrasound scanning to obtain ultrasound images of the patient's internal organs.


I. Scope of Endoscopic Ultrasound Examination

1. Applicable to determining the cause, location, size, and nature of various submucosal lesions in the digestive tract.

2. Staging of gastrointestinal cancer (tumor invasion depth, presence or absence of regional lymph node and adjacent organ metastasis) and assessment of resectability.

3. Diagnosis and differential diagnosis of lesions in adjacent organs of the digestive tract (gallstones, cholangiocarcinoma, pancreatic cancer, pancreatitis, and pancreatic cysts, etc.).

II. Which Diseases Require Endoscopic Ultrasound

(1) Malignant tumors of the digestive tract (such as esophageal cancer, gastric cancer, colon, rectum)

Perform TNM staging, but the effect on M staging is limited, to assess surgical resectability, prognosis, and guide treatment plan selection.

(2) Submucosal tumors (such as leiomyomas)

Determine whether it is an extramural lesion, organ compression, or a lesion of the tube wall itself; determine the exact origin, nature, and extent of the lesion; and guide the selection of treatment options.

(3) Pancreaticobiliary lesions

It is a good auxiliary diagnostic and differential diagnostic method for chronic pancreatitis, which can better reflect the changes in the pancreatic parenchyma structure and perform fine-needle aspiration biopsy of pancreatic lesions.

III. Differences in Preparation Before Endoscopic Ultrasound Examination and Ordinary Endoscopic Examination

The preparation before endoscopic ultrasound examination is exactly the same as that before ordinary gastroscopy and colonoscopy.

Endoscopic ultrasound combines ultrasound probes and endoscope technology. When the endoscope is inserted into the digestive tract, it can directly observe mucosal surface lesions through the endoscope and perform real-time ultrasound scanning to observe the ultrasound images of the various layers of tissue structure in the digestive tract wall and its adjacent organs, further improving the diagnostic level of endoscopy and ultrasound.
