Malfunction Phenomenon
When operating the trackball, the measurement marker fails to move, the star-shaped marker moves erratically, sometimes uncontrollably in a certain direction, and the malfunction is unpredictable.
Malfunction Analysis
The movement principle of the ultrasound measurement marker is as follows: the trackball friction drives two metal rods placed at right angles inside the box. Each rod has a metal disc with holes around its circumference placed in the optical path of its respective photoelectric emission and reception unit. When the metal disc rotates with the rod, the light passing through the holes on the disc is converted into corresponding electrical pulses by the receiving unit. These pulse signals are then amplified and processed by the relevant circuits to control the movement of the measurement marker along the X-Y axis. The intermittent nature of the malfunction and the fact that the star-shaped marker is sometimes controllable suggest that the measurement marker control circuit is basically functioning correctly. The cause of the ultrasound malfunction may be poor soldering of the relevant circuit components or poor mechanical contact in the transmission system. The focus of the inspection should be on the trackball operating box.
After opening the control panel and removing the four fixing screws of the trackball box, the box was separated and the top cover opened, revealing a box filled with clumps of dust. This dust is due to the infiltration of ultrasound coupling agent. The gaps in the optical path of the photoelectric unit and some of the holes on the metal disc were also filled with this dust. When a certain optical path is blocked, the photoelectric pulse disappears, and the star-shaped marker cannot move in the corresponding direction. When the dust clumps in the optical path are removed by the metal disc, the malfunction will temporarily disappear. When part of the holes in the metal disc are blocked, the number of photoelectric pulses for the same arc of trackball rotation is reduced compared to normal, resulting in a slower movement speed of the star-shaped marker.
Malfunction Elimination
The dust on the photoelectric unit and the components in the box was repeatedly cleaned with a brush and anhydrous alcohol. After reassembly, the malfunction was eliminated, and the ultrasound machine could be used normally.
