Malfunction Phenomenon

When using the S5-1 probe, the IE33 ultrasound machine shows a fixed, dark artifact on the left side. This only occurs with the S5-1 probe; probes such as L11-3 and C8-4V do not exhibit this issue.

Malfunction Analysis and Handling

Under the guidance of an engineer, the doctor discovered that pressing the iscan (one-button optimization) button on the panel restored the image to normal. The doctor then checked the alignment of the eight LGC (lateral gain compensation) function keys on the machine panel and found that one gain key was set unusually low. After adjusting this gain key appropriately, the image from the S5-1 probe returned to normal.

Why did pressing the iscan button restore the image? Why were probes like L11-3 unaffected?？

BecauseIscan, also known as the intelligent one-button optimization key, automatically adjusts parameters such as two-dimensional gain, dynamic range (compress), time gain compensation (TGC), and lateral gain compensation (LGC). Therefore, when the gain of a certain section of LGC deviates significantly, activating iscan will automatically adjust it.

TGC stands for time gain compensation, while LGC stands for lateral gain compensation. Both compensate for ultrasound echo signals of different intensities to maintain the uniformity and consistency of grayscale images. TGC mainly acts on the horizontal (or depth) direction of the image, while LGC mainly acts on the vertical direction. The LGC function is often used in the imaging conditions of cardiac probes; therefore, when the doctor switches to probes like L11-3, the image is not affected.
