What are the different types of ultrasonic transducer excitation?

For an ultrasonic transducer to function, it must receive a pulsed signal (i.e., pulse) to excite the piezoelectric ceramic chip. Due to the piezoelectric effect, the piezoelectric ceramic chip will emit a signal under the excitation of the pulse, and this signal is ultrasound. Different frequency pulse excitations are different. There are two types of pulse excitations: negative square wave pulse excitation and spike pulse excitation. Each has its own advantages.

  Generally, ultrasonic thickness gauges use spike pulse excitation. Spike pulse excitation is relatively simple and easier to implement in terms of circuit design, and is generally used for probes with frequencies above 5 MHz. This excitation does not have high requirements for the pulse, and the ultrasonic signal generated is relatively weak, as long as it meets the usage requirements.

 Another type of excitation is square pulse excitation. Square pulse excitation is more common in flaw detectors, but some thickness gauges also use square waves. Square pulse excitation generally excites frequencies below 5 MHz, such as 2 MHz, 1 MHz, and 0.5 MHz. If frequencies below 5 MHz are excited using spike pulses, it is easy to have no waveform or a very weak signal; therefore, low frequencies use square pulses for excitation.
