Ultrasonic Case: Repair of Uneven Echo Failure

Taking the Siemens ACUSON S2000 color Doppler ultrasound diagnostic instrument as an example, during the scanning and detection process using a superficial probe by the operator, multiple longitudinal anechoic areas consistent with the beam direction appear on the screen, the echo distribution is uneven, and thus adversely affects the ultrasound diagnosis.

Fault Repair

The fault repair process is as follows:

First, for the problem of uneven echo display on the screen during the application of the color Doppler ultrasound diagnostic instrument, the gain factor can be considered first. The operator can switch the working probe to the abdominal or cardiac probe and adjust the gain, zoom in to the near field, and observe the echo situation. If the near-field echo distribution is uniform, it indicates that both the time gain compensation and lateral gain compensation are normal.

Second, after ruling out the gain problem, considering that the fault only occurs in the superficial working probe, it can be considered that it is caused by a physical channel fault of the working probe. At this time, the maintenance personnel can replace the superficial working probe to other color Doppler ultrasound diagnostic instrument interfaces. If the test result shows that the fault still exists, the fault can be ruled out as being caused by an abnormal physical channel of the device interface.

Third, based on this, the maintenance personnel can retrieve and compare the ultrasound images of the superficial working probe of this color Doppler ultrasound diagnostic instrument in the recent period, and monitor the physical channel of the superficial working probe. At this time, if it is found that the longitudinal anechoic areas consistent with the beam direction on the screen increase significantly with the extension of time, it indicates that some piezoelectric transducers inside the ultrasound probe are damaged. The fault was solved by directly replacing the working probe.

Fault Analysis

As one of the core components of the working probe in the color Doppler ultrasound diagnostic instrument, the piezoelectric transducer has the characteristics of both transmitting and receiving. Under current technical conditions, the number of piezoelectric crystals in the working probe of a color Doppler ultrasound diagnostic instrument can reach 128. Regardless of the number of virtual channels in the device, the acquisition and emission of ultrasonic waves in the actual operation of the color Doppler ultrasound diagnostic instrument must be achieved through the piezoelectric transducer.

From the above analysis, it can be seen that when the echo area on the screen of the color Doppler ultrasound diagnostic instrument is abnormal, the operation and gain adjustment problems should be considered first.
