A Brief Discussion of Ten Olympus Endoscope Repair Cases

1 Air and water supply malfunction

Malfunction: Accumulation of dirt inside the endoscope's water and air pipes, causing nozzle blockage and affecting the air and water supply function.
Solution: Remove the distal end nozzle pin, loosen the nozzle fixing screw to remove the nozzle, replace the nozzle or clean the dirt inside the nozzle (depending on the blockage and nozzle usage), rinse the water and air pipes, and reinstall.
Prevention: It is recommended that doctors press the suction button and the water and air button simultaneously during the examination to prevent dirt from flowing back into the water and air pipes; nurses should perform thorough bedside cleaning during the cleaning process.

2 Insufficient Angle

Malfunction: Long-term use causes the internal angle wire of the insertion tube to extend and age, resulting in an insufficient angle.
Solution: Use a special tool to remove the conical sleeve, suction interface, handle, and angle wire fixture of the operating section. According to the wire extension and aging (severe aging requires sending the unit to headquarters for wire shortening or insertion part repair), adjust the fixing screws appropriately, and reinstall the parts after confirming the angle.
Prevention: During operation, open the knob lock and rotate the knob.

3 Bending rubber leakage

Malfunction: The bending rubber is cracked and leaking.
Solution: Cut off the bent rubber, dry the distal end for 12h to remove water that has seeped in due to rubber leakage, replace the new rubber (apply glue, apply carbon powder, put on rubber, tie wire, apply glue, dry for more than 12h), and then perform a leak test after completion.
Prevention: Clean, transport, store and maintain the endoscope separately, do not stack it with scissors, forceps and other instruments, and pay attention to placing the distal end at the top in the cleaning tray.

 

4 Water leakage from the large and small knobs

Malfunction: Due to long-term use, the sealing ring inside the knob is worn or the sealing oil is dry, resulting in insufficient airtightness and water leakage from the knob.
Solution: Open the operating section, dry the internal moisture, open the remote control button cover, remove the fixing screws, small knob lock, small knob, large knob, and sealing ring, and then replace the new large and small knobs and sealing rings, adjust the fixing plate and install the cover, and finally perform a leak test.Prevention: Use cautiously and avoid dropping the operating section.


5 Remote control button leakage

Malfunction: Pinholes or cracks in the outer skin of the remote control button cause water leakage.
Solution: Open the operating section and dry the internal moisture. Replace the remote control button and outer skin and re-weld the signal wire and shielding wire (If other buttons are found to be aged or have water ingress during button repair, they should be replaced as well).
Prevention: When operating button one, press the button vertically to avoid cracks caused by stress around it. Be careful not to clean and store it with sharp objects.

6 Poor contact of electrical connector

Malfunction: The electrical connector is loose or water-damaged and corroded, resulting in poor contact with the endoscope cable, causing the image to flicker or disappear intermittently.
Solution: Open the electrical connector and dry the internal moisture or replace the electrical connector.
Prevention: After bedside cleaning, be sure to cover it with a waterproof cap and check if the waterproof cap is airtight and if there is any water seepage inside.


7 Cover glass scratches, breakage, or foreign matter adhesion
Malfunction: Damage to the distal end cover glass causes shadows, blurry images, and flickering stripes in the image.
Solution: Regularly inspect the mirror surface and clean it with an alcohol gauze. For damage to the mirror surface, choose to replace the NS component or distal end component according to the type of mirror.
Prevention: Ensure the safety of the distal end during daily use and transportation, avoid collision of the lens with hard objects, and wipe the lens surface with soft materials when cleaning.

8 Aging and yellowing of the serpentine tube
Malfunction: The tissue protein remaining on the surface of the insertion tube is dehydrated and adhered to the outer skin during disinfection by glutaraldehyde. Long-term accumulation forms crystals, causing the outer skin of the insertion tube to turn yellow and rough.
Solution: Replace the insertion component.
Prevention: After bedside examination, wipe the outer skin with gauze soaked in enzymatic cleaning solution to preliminarily dissolve the surface tissue, and then perform the cleaning process.


9 Dark image
Malfunction: Insufficient bulb brightness or broken light guide.
Solution: Adjust the bulb intensity, replace the bulb, or replace the insertion tube + light guide component.
Prevention: Reduce frequent switching of the cold light source, turn off the bulb when not in use for a long time. Prevent water leakage, the insertion tube from being bitten by the patient, and excessive bending of the insertion tube light guide hose.

10 No image
Malfunction: Endoscope water leakage, CCD water immersion burn-out, poor contact of CCD circuit electrical connector, incorrect connection of signal cable from host to monitor, incorrect monitor channel selection.
Solution: Class A repair, replace all core components.
Prevention: Complete the water leakage test as required, find and immediately solve the water leakage fault, and understand the equipment wiring, monitor channel display.
