Classification of endoscopes

From an application perspective, they can be simply divided into two major categories: industrial endoscopes and medical endoscopes.
Regarding the types of industrial endoscopes, they are classified by imaging methods into: optical endoscopes, fiber optic endoscopes, electronic endoscopes, CCD video endoscopes, and CMOS video endoscopes. They are also classified by light source type into high-frequency fluorescent lamp endoscopes, fiber optic halogen lamp endoscopes, and LED endoscopes.
Regarding the classification of medical endoscopes, based on their development and imaging structure, they can be broadly divided into three categories: rigid endoscopes, fiber optic (flexible) endoscopes, and electronic endoscopes.
Medical endoscopes used for examinations have many different types, and their classification methods vary. Generally speaking, the following three classification methods are commonly used. In terms of market sales, the most commonly used categories are currently rigid endoscopes and flexible endoscopes, based on whether the direction can be changed clinically.
By endoscope function
They are divided into single-function endoscopes and multi-function endoscopes. Single-function endoscopes refer to observation endoscopes with only an optical system and no working channel; multi-function endoscopes refer to endoscopes that, in addition to having the function of an observation endoscope, also have at least one working channel in the same body, with multiple functions such as illumination, surgery, flushing, and suction.
By the area the endoscope reaches
Classification is done based on the area the endoscope reaches: ear, nose, and throat endoscopes, oral endoscopes, dental endoscopes, neuroendoscopes, urethral bladder endoscopes, resectoscopes, laparoscopes, arthroscopes, sinus endoscopes, laryngoscopes, etc.
Based on whether the body can change direction
Clinically, classification is based on whether the endoscope body can change direction: rigid endoscopes and flexible endoscopes. Rigid endoscopes (RIGID ENDOSCOPE) use a prism optical system. Their greatest advantage is clear imaging, and they can be equipped with multiple working channels and multiple viewing angles. Flexible endoscopes (FLEXIBLE ENDOSCOPE) use a fiber optic system. The biggest feature of this fiber optic endoscope is that the lens part can be manipulated by the operator to change direction, expanding the range of applications, but the imaging effect is not as good as that of rigid endoscopes.
