Maintenance and Disinfection of Ultrasound Probe Cables

Probes play a crucial role in ultrasound equipment. In daily work, we have found many cases of probe cable damage, which affects image quality and electrical safety. However, these cable damages can be effectively mitigated with proper usage habits and maintenance.This article provides the correct methods for using and maintaining probes.

1.Improper cleaning or disinfection can cause discoloration, hardening, embrittlement, and eventual breakage of the cable.

Correct cable placement method

1. Disconnect the probe from the instrument.

2. Adjust the connector's orientation so the cable extends from the top.

3. Clean the cable and connector using a soft cloth dampened with lukewarm soapy water or disinfectant. A soft brush may be used only to clean the metal surfaces of the connector. Do not allow any liquid to enter the connector through the electrical contacts. 4. Mix the disinfectant suitable for the cable according to the label instructions of the disinfectant concentration. For example, bleach-based disinfectants (such as 84 disinfectant, concentration should not exceed 0.6%) or quaternary ammonium disinfectants (concentration at 0.5%). Do not use alcohol-based products to prevent damage to the cable.

5. Air dry or wipe dry with a disinfected cloth according to the disinfectant label instructions.

6. Limit the use of 70% isopropyl alcohol. Only use isopropyl alcohol solution to wipe the probe tip area more than one inch (2.5 cm) away from the strain relief/boot connector. Do not use isopropyl alcohol solution to wipe the strain relief/boot connector, strain relief or cable. Isopropyl alcohol solution may damage these probe components.

7. All probe cables and connectors can be disinfected using the recommended wiping or spray disinfectant method.

Keep the bending angle greater than 90 degrees, and keep the cable straight.

 

3. Improper cable placement leads to tangling, twisting, and deformation that cannot be recovered.

When not in use, place the probe in a probe holder on the diagnostic system cart. To prevent stepping on or running over cables with the cart wheels, wrap the probe cables around the cable hanger, or use an easily clamped probe cable manager.
