The demands of the medical imaging market are increasing, and designs are becoming more complex. In terms of medicalUltrasoundsystems, they are developing towards high integration, high performance, low power consumption, multi-functionality, and portability. Based on the number of system channels, the ultrasound market can be divided into three major markets: high-end, mid-range, and low-end/portable. 128-256 channels and above correspond to the high-end market, around 64 channels correspond to the mid-range market, and 32 channels and below correspond to the low-end/portable market. Typically, 32 system channels are sufficient to meet the needs of primary diagnosis and portable devices. Recently, TI launched the AFE58xx series of analog front-end circuits targeting the mid-to-low end market, aiming to improve medical imaging quality, reduce power consumption, and make ultrasound systems easier to use.
Because ultrasound signals are easily susceptible to interference from the external environment during operation, temperature, sound, and light waves can all affect their testing accuracy, especially in increasingly complex designs. Therefore, how to improve the accuracy of medical imaging as much as possible has become one of the key research directions for various manufacturers.AFE58xx integrates a low-noise amplifier (LNA), a voltage-controlled attenuator, a programmable gain amplifier, a low-pass filter, and a 12-bit 50 MSPS ADC supporting LVDS data output into a single chip, reducing interference from external signals and improving signal accuracy. At 2MHzAFEfrequency, the 58xx noise is only 0.85nV/rtHz. In addition, the AFE58xx has high gain, a wide gain control range, and low LNA input voltage noise, achieving higher image sensitivity.
For portable devices, low power consumption and small size are also extremely important. The highly integrated AFE58xx uses a small 15 x 9 mm package, making the chip's size about half that of existing solutions. In terms of power consumption, by reducing the number of components, the AFE5805 reduces power consumption by 20% with a per-channel power efficiency of 122mW, meeting the requirements of portable devices and high-channel density, mid-range ultrasound systems.
In the medical imaging market, in addition to the newly launched analog front-end products, TI also provides a variety of products including DSPs and ADCs. The previously launched new 10-12 bit 8-channel analog-to-digital converter ADS5281 series features high resolution, high sampling rate (up to 65 MSPS), low noise, and advanced digital functions. The ADS5281 series can be connected to the TI 8-channel variable gain amplifier VCA8500, with the VCA8500 having a power consumption and input noise of 63mW and 0.8 nV/sqrt Hz per channel, respectively. The combination of the two products can help users build medical signal chain solutions. At a sampling rate of 50 MSPS, the per-channel power consumption does not exceed 130mW, suitable for portable ultrasound, MRI, and other sensitive imaging equipment applications.
