90% of medical device products have been localized
By the end of 2020, China imported a total of 26,713 medical devices, a decrease of 1,904 units compared to the end of 2019, a decrease of 6.7%. Among them, there were 9,694 Class Ⅰ imported products, 9,053 Class Ⅱ products, and 7,966 Class Ⅲ products. There were a total of 2,421 agents for imported products, a decrease of 4% compared to 2019.
By the end of 2020, a total of 717 domestically produced Class II medical devices had a localization rate of over 70%, accounting for 64.54%; 164 products had a localization rate between 50%-70%; 170 products had a localization rate below 50%, accounting for 15.30%; and 60 products were not localized, accounting for 5.40%. Currently, over 90% of Class II medical devices have been localized.
The degree of localization of medical devices is constantly deepening
From 2017 to 2020, the degree of localization of medical devices in China has been constantly deepening. In 2017, only 518 Class II medical devices had a localization rate exceeding 50%, while in 2020, this number reached 881, an increase of 70%.
Furthermore, more and more medical devices in China have achieved breakthroughs in localization. In 2017, 166 Class II medical devices had not been localized, while in 2020, only 60 products remained unlocalized. From 2017 to 2020, 106 Class II medical devices achieved localization.
The state promotes the localization process of medical devices
On February 9, 2021, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology publicly solicited opinions from the public on the "Development Plan for the Medical Equipment Industry (2021-2025)", which mentioned that by 2025, major breakthroughs will be made in key components and materials, high-end medical equipment will be safe and reliable, product performance and quality will reach international standards, and the medical equipment industry system will be basically improved. The state is also continuously promoting the localization process of medical devices.
