Wuhan advances towards becoming the 'fourth pole' of domestic medical devices; Mindray Medical settles in Optics Valley

On December 24, Shenzhen Mindray Bio-Medical Electronics Co., Ltd., China's largest medical device research and development and manufacturing enterprise, officially established Wuhan Mindray Medical Technology Research Institute Co., Ltd. in Guanggu, settling in the Guanggu Bio-City Medical Device Park.
This is Mindray's ninth R&D center globally.
Mindray Wuhan Research Institute covers approximately 110 mu (approximately 7.3 hectares), with a fixed asset investment of 1.3 billion yuan. Its main focus areas include biomaterial and reagent R&D, surgical equipment R&D, big health technology R&D, as well as five major sectors: a global service support center and an engineering technology transformation center. Upon completion, the institute will employ approximately 2,000 people, including 1,200 high-end R&D personnel.
As a leading medical device company in China, Mindray, founded in 1991 and headquartered in Shenzhen, has a market capitalization exceeding 200 billion yuan. Currently, Mindray's medical devices and other products have entered over 110,000 medical institutions and more than 95% of Class-A hospitals in China. The company employs nearly 10,000 people globally. In 2018, Mindray achieved sales revenue of 13.75 billion yuan.
Previously, Mindray had established R&D centers in eight locations: Shenzhen, Beijing, Nanjing, Xi'an, Chengdu, and Silicon Valley, New Jersey, and Seattle in the United States. These centers primarily focus on life information and support, clinical testing and reagents, and medical imaging. Wuhan will be positioned as an extra-large R&D center.
“Mindray's arrival is a milestone for Guanggu and even Wuhan's life health industry.” A relevant official from Guanggu Bio-City stated that Mindray has filed over 2,900 patent applications, 19% of which are US invention patents. In the future, Mindray will leverage its leading position in Wuhan to attract upstream and downstream industrial chains. More importantly, the leading achievements and patents developed here will significantly enhance Guanggu's innovative influence in the medical device field.
In the 2018 ranking of Chinese medical device companies, Shenzhen Mindray (ranked first), Shanghai United Imaging (ranked second), and Shenzhen BGI Genomics (ranked sixth), among other leading medical device companies, have all settled in Guanggu. Guanggu's medical device industry is moving towards becoming the fourth major medical device industry cluster in China, following the Bohai Rim, Yangtze River Delta, and Pearl River Delta regions.
