Recently, a miniature medical imaging sensor developed by OmniVision Technologies, Inc. of the United States won a Guinness World Record, being called the world's "smallest commercial image sensor".

Just how small is "smallest"?

Small but mighty
The OV 6948 was initially developed for small-diameter medical endoscopes and catheters. Utilizing OmniVision's proprietary OmniBSI™+ pixel technology, it boasts optimal image quality and low-light performance. The OV 6948 has a 1/36-inch optical format and image array, capable of capturing 200 x 200 pixels at 30 frames per second. It functions well even in low-light environments (1000 mV/lux-sec sensitivity), ensuring excellent image quality in terms of color fidelity, sharpness, and low noise. The sensor can also be easily integrated with a 4-pin interface and analog data output, capable of transmitting data up to 4 meters with minimal signal noise. It provides the highest resolution in the smallest module size.

OmniVision has also designed the OVM 6948-Rala camera, which integrates the OV 6948 image sensor. It provides high-quality images, and its excellent low-light performance helps reduce LED heat generation and improve light sensitivity. It also allows the use of superior lenses compared to competing front-illuminated cameras. Additionally, this color analog camera with OmniBSI+™ technology is easy to calibrate in production, and its 4-pin interface simplifies integration, facilitating streamlined processes, reducing time to market, and lowering costs.
This camera can be inserted into the thinnest veins in the human body, assisting surgeons during operations. Its camera unit provides a 120° wide-angle view and a depth of field ranging from 3mm to 30mm.
Facilitating the application of disposable medical endoscopes
In the past, minimally invasive surgeries were performed blindly or with low-quality fiber optic scopes. With the expanding application of minimally invasive surgery, the market demand for endoscopes has increased year by year. In addition, these complete modules with 200x200 or 40k pixels can be integrated into catheters or endoscopes with a diameter of approximately 1.0 mm, capable of capturing high-quality images from within narrow blood vessels in the body for neurosurgery, ophthalmology, otorhinolaryngology, cardiology, spine surgery, urology, gynecology, and arthroscopy. This provides a compact, high-quality solution for disposable wires, catheters, and endoscopes, significantly alleviating the problems of high cost and poor image quality associated with disposable endoscopes.
